The Messaging Architects to GWAVA Switch Frequently Asked Questions
Why is GWAVA offering this competitive switch deal?
We want you to be our customer. At GWAVA, we think we have the best suite of GroupWise solutions on the market as well as unparalleled customer support. We want to make your GroupWise system as secure, reliable and easy to manage as possible. We are continually developing extensions and upgrades to our products to keep them up-to-date with the latest advancements in messaging technology and trends.
How does the deal work?
If you are a current customer of the Messaging Architects® with a subscription to either M+Archive™ or M+Guardian™, you qualify for the GWAVA competitive switch offer. GWAVA will give you the licenses free to either Retain™ or GWAVA® (depending upon which product you are switching from). You only need to purchase one year of maintenance for the product and we will add your remaining paid subscription time from your Messaging Architects product.
Do you need to upgrade any other products?
No. You can upgrade from either M+Archive to Retain or from M+Guardian to the latest version of GWAVA anti-spam and anti-virus protection. You do not need to upgrade to any other GWAVA products to take advantage of this offer. But you can upgrade both if you like.
Do I have to wait until my current subscription contract has ended?
No. Even if you have time left before your current agreement expires, you can purchase one year of upgrade and support protection for Retain now and extend your protection to the full term you have paid for. For example, if you have 6 months remaining on your M+Archive subscription, we would add your remaining 6 months to your new 12 month Retain subscription for free, giving you a total of 18 months. This would allow you to upgrade immediately rather than wait for your existing subscription to expire. This offer also applies to M+Guardian and GWAVA.
Why would I want to switch to Retain instead of staying with M+Archive?
There are plenty of reasons to choose Retain over M+Archive. Here are a few:
- Retain offers flexibility in choosing an OS platform
- Retain offers data compression and encryption out of the box
- Retain offers a built-in web client for archive browsing and searching
- GWAVA is currently developing support for cloud storage for Retain
- Retain offers superior storage of email
- Retain offers single instance storage (SiS)
- Retain offers recovery for a stubbed GroupWise message. M+Archive does not.

What if I want to migrate from GroupWise to Exchange or another email solution?
GWAVA, while offering complete support for GroupWise, offers the simplest and most reliable migration path should your organization choose to move to another system. You can be sure that your investment in GWAVA is protected.
If you are using M+Archive and migrate to Exchange®, there are drawbacks. Here’s how M+Archive “migration” works:
The Messaging Architects does not migrate a message from GroupWise to Exchange. They archive the email from GroupWise, store it in M+Archive and then create a stub in Exchange. So if you have 2000 messages in your GroupWise mailbox, you will end up with 2000 stubs in your new Outlook® mailbox. This bad for a couple of important reasons:
- The stubbed messages will only be accessible if you have internet access to the M+Archive server. If you are offline or the M+Archive is otherwise not available, you are unable to access those messages. This might not be a big deal when you stub 90-day-old mail, but when you are stubbing everything including your most recent email, it's a big deal.
- Microsoft recommends against stubbing all mail. As such, the Messaging Architects is advocating a migration method counter to Microsoft.
- There are a lot of reasons you may not want your entire email system stubbed, especially since there is no way to return from stubbed email to full messages. GWAVA Retain does not force you to stub all of your messages. You can stub some, all or none, depending on your preferences. To hear more about the advantages and disadvantages of stubbing, and to listen to a webinar on stubbing.
Both GWAVA Retain and our GWAVA anti-spam, anti-virus product fully support Microsoft Exchange. You do not need to upgrade your product if you decide to make the switch from GroupWise. We make it easy for you. Not only does Retain support Exchange, but it also supports OCS and Lotus Notes. We will also fully support Novell Pulse as soon as it is released.
What if I already have an Exalead server?
Even though GWAVA Retain does not require an Exalead server, it does support using it and will probably speed up your indexing if you have a large email system. Unless you have over 2500 users, the built-in Lucene indexing engine will be sufficient for your needs. It costs nothing and requires no management effort.
