Retain: Archive & Retention: Novell GroupWise

Frequently Asked Questions

How smooth is the upgrade?

It is very easy. Simply install the new version over the top and it will preserve your existing configuration.

Are both the worker and Retain supported on 64-bit or is the worker a 32-bit app?

Retain 2 requires 64-bit for all server components. The worker is both 32- and 64-bit capable.

Are attachments also available in the exported PDF?

Yes. They are embedded with the email in the PDF.

Does Retain archive attachments in a message, where the attachment is saved in GroupWise Document Management?

No. Currently Retain only supports the OpenText LiveLink DMS system.

How would one handle redacting messages that are exported?

Redaction support is built into Retain version 2 and requires some actions from an auditor to strike out non-relevant information.

Is the worker a separate server or process running on the Retain server?

Yes. There are three components in Retain: the Worker, the Server and the SQL database.  The worker is a separate service that collects data from the GroupWise post office.  You can have many workers.

Can you run more than one worker on a server? If so can each worker connect to a different POA?

Yes, you can have multiple workers on one machine. You should normally configure your system with one worker per GroupWise post office.

Can you have 2 different servers with workers accessing the same POA?

No, you should have one worker per PO.

Can you launch the Retain web page from within the GroupWise client?

Yes. Retain supports single sign-on (SSO) in both the GroupWise client and WebAccess so end users don't have to type in their credentials a second time.

Can you set up Retain in a disaster recovery environment without an additional license?

Retain is sold on a per-user basis, which means you can have backups of your data with only the cost of storage hardware as an additional cost.

The Retain WebAccess link was not working through a firewall. Has that been fixed?

Yes.

Does the Exalead index server need to run on a separate 64-bit server? Does it run on Linux?

Yes, a separate dedicated server is recommended. Exalead requires Linux64 and Windows64.

Can a current Retain archive be migrated to the Amazon S3 cloud?

Yes. Retain 2 offers a migration tool that allows you to migrate your data from one storage model/engine to another, and back again.

In the event of mailbox corruption, how does Retain interact with GWCheck or other maintenance utilities? Does it come with a maintenance utility for such situations?

GWCheck is your best bet to clean up any possible corruption within the GroupWise message store.

Why do I not have deletion management?

The ACL for an upgrade is not set. You'll need to go login as admin, click user management, click admin, and grant rights.
We are running Retain 2, yet I do not see the export tabs. Is this a feature I need to enable?

We are running Retain, yet I do not see the export tabs. Is this a feature I need to enable?

Yes. Again, the ACL for an upgrade is not set. See the previous answer.

Do I have to use stubbing with Retain?

No! Stubbing is an optional method of archiving your GroupWise emails. But you should be aware that once you make the switch to stubbing, there is no going back. That’s why GWAVA offers the free stubbing edition of Retain. You can try it out using a backup copy of your post office and see if it will work for you.

Do I need to use other GWAVA products with Retain?

It is not necessary to use any other GWAVA products; however, if you choose to do so, all of these products are fully compatible with each other and the latest version of GroupWise. Reload and Retain work especially well in tandem.

Can you export with Retain and still view GroupWise item properties such as “opened,” “deleted,” etc.?

Yes, in the PDF export, Retain preserves the routing properties in a separate XML file.

How does the Amazon S3 Cloud storage work? Does it include all message aspects (base message and Blob data)?

The Amazon integration is like any other storage option.  No meta data or information is sacrificed and the full messages are stored in the cloud.  Meta data is still stored in the SQL database.

Can Retain be accessed from WebAccess through the firewall in this version of Retain using some kind of proxy?

Yes. Retain WebAccess SSO can be used remotely in Retain 2.  In the end this was a pretty simple fix to a few parameters for different URLs.   Proxy or NAT is not needed.

Are there licensing costs associated with using the Exalead indexing option?

Yes. Please contact GWAVA sales for pricing/promotional information for Exalead.

What functionality will the free version of Retain not include?

I currently have Reload and I quarantine all messages. Will Retain archive all that is in quarantine?

The free version of Retain is the Stubbing Server. There is no web UI for searching since that functionality is gained via the GroupWise client.  And yes, Retain will archive all email from Reload if configured to do so.

If we test stubbing with the free version of Retain, can we back the emails out if we decide not to continue after a period of testing?

No.  This is a limitation of the stubbing API.  If you "stub" your GroupWise email, you can't change your mind at a later date and “unstub” your email.

Can you cluster Retain now?

Not yet.  This is coming in Retain 3, next year.  Retain R&D is already working on it.

Should we plan to backup email in Retain? We currently have Reload.

Absolutely.  Having a backup of your backup and a backup of your archive is always a good idea.  For Retain, the backup procedure is detailed in the administrator’s guide.
