The amount of news that is churned out on a daily basis about the use of text messages is staggering

The amount of news that is churned out on a daily basis about the use of text messages is staggering. I spend my days having conversations about mobility policies, strategies, security and the overall usefulness of text and PIN messaging. I also spend a lot of my time explaining the advantage of deploying a Blackberry only mobility policy, for security and legal reasons. Finding all of these news items every week, only serves as proof that what I am telling organizations is exactly right...

Here are some of the most topical news items from the week of June 21st.

About Blackberry PIN messaging:"Where PIN messaging can benefit users in a corporate enviorment is instant communication in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. For clients that use an email server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server, their email is 100% dependant on those working. In the event that power is lost or a natural disaster (IE: tornado, hurricane, etc) disables those servers, PIN messaging is an excellent backup, as it relies strictly on the wireless data network to transmit messages, and not a BES connection. This means that PIN messaging will still work fine, even if your Exchange and BES are not functioning. While PIN messaging is not a complete solution to disaster recovery in the event that your servers are rendered inoperable, it does allow you to still have instant access to all the employees/co-workers in your company." People can't stop texting! Are you liable if your employee has an accident while sending a working related text from behind the wheel?

Survey: College kids are text-crazed

June 22, 2010

Text messaging has far eclipsed e-mail and instant messaging as college students' favored way of staying in touch, according to a new study that finds that 97 percent of students now send and receive text messages, while only about a quarter of them use e-mail or instant messaging.Ball State journalism professor Michael Hanley, who surveyed 5,500 students for the study, also found that smart phones now account for 49 percent of mobile communication devices on college campuses. That's up more than 10 percent since just October.Hanley says that, except for studying, students are quickly leaving computers and e-mail behind. He says college students' hectic lifestyles are behind their embrace of smart phones and texting.
